BMT Process & Experiences

Whether to go ahead with a bone marrow transplant (BMT) is a major decision for any individual or family. While the experts can give you their views, families often want to talk to others who have been through the experience.

A film about the BMT process

The story of Alfie's BMT (March 2013)

Before you watch this film, we would like to emphasise that while the BMT process is broadly similar across the world, the protocols regarding medications, the length of time a patient will remain in isolation, etc., may differ from hospital to hospital. It should also be noted that each patient is unique and that comparisons should not be made between this film and your child regarding their state of health prior to transplant or their speed of recovery post-transplant.

Please be aware that this film includes scenes from inside a hospital that may not be considered appropriate for all audiences. We would ask all parents to watch this film first before showing it to a child under 18 who may be considering a bone marrow transplant.

If you have any feedback about this film that you would like to share with us, please do get in touch.

A film about the sibling bone marrow donation process

The story of Henry's bone marrow donation (March 2013)

If you are asked to give consent for your child to be a bone marrow donor for one of their siblings affected by CGD, you might be concerned about what is involved in the process of collecting the bone marrow that will be donated.

This three minute film tells the story of Henry, who is 18 years old, and is donating bone marrow to his younger brother, Alfie, who has CGD.

This film was made in the UK and shows the UK protocol used for bone marrow collection from children aged 18 years and under. Please note that a different process known as peripheral blood stem cell donation (PBSC) is used for collecting bone marrow from adults aged 19 years and over in the UK. This process involves a course of injections followed by a collection procedure that does not require a general anaesthetic. Please be aware that if you are watching this film from outside the UK, the bone marrow collection process in your country may differ from the one shown in this film.

This film is considered appropriate for all audiences. However, we would ask all parents to watch this film first before showing it to a child who will be donating bone marrow.

If you have any feedback about this film that you would like to share with us, please do get in touch.
