Transition to adult services takes a long time, so you won’t suddenly be expected to stay away. It will happen eventually, when you are all ready to try it.
This is something that your child or person with CGD who you care for should talk over with you and a doctor and nurse. You will of course still have an important role in supporting your child.
When children turn 16, they have the right to decide if they want their parents to be involved in their health care . Health workers are not allowed to tell parents about anything they have talked about with over 16s unless they have their patient’s permission.
After the age of consent (16), every patient has the right to confidentiality. This doesn’t mean that you no longer have, or no longer should have, an important role to play in supporting your son/daughter. It might be helpful to talk this through with our CGD clinical nurse specialist or psychology team who can help you all adjust to the new situation.
