BMT Patient Stories

Whether to go ahead with a bone marrow transplant (BMT) is a major decision for any individual or family. While the experts can give you their views, families often want to talk to others who have been through the experience.

Alex' story (June 2020)

This year marks a significant anniversary for a thirty-something creative in Sydney Australia – it has been 15 years since he underwent a successful bone marrow transplant.

Thomas' story (April 2012)

11 month old Thomas received marrow from an unrelated donor to treat his X-linked CGD. The story of his BMT at the Great North Children's Hospital, England, is told by his father, Kevin.

 

Sam's  story (January 2012)

14 year old Sam received marrow from an unrelated donor to treat his X-linked CGD. The story of his BMT at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, England, is told by his mother, Angela.

 

Tom's story (November 2017)

This is the story of Tom, who died on 9 July 2014 from infections after a BMT. His story is told by his mum, Michaela. Tom had all the classic symptoms of CGD when he was a baby and was misdiagnosed with Crohn’s disease. He was finally diagnosed with CGD, p47 phox deficiency, when he was 12 years old but by this time his CGD had taken an immense toll on his body.

Constantino's story (July 2017)

22 year old Constantinos has had two BMT procedures to treat his X-linked CGD. His first transplant was rejected but the second using an unrelated donor has cured him of CGD. He graduated in July 2017 with a degree in 3D Animation and Games from Middlesex University

Jonathan's story (March 2017)

Ten-year-old Jonathan had a bone marrow transplant (BMT) in 2013. His journey involved his parents carefully weighing up the risks and benefits associated with gene therapy and BMT. The outcome was that Jonathan became the first person in the world to undergo an unrelated cord stem cell transplant to treat his X-linked CGD. Isaac's story (February 2014)
